Non-Surgical Abortion Q & A

What is a non-surgical abortion?

Womens Clinic LA provides non-surgical abortions using Mifeprex, better known as the RU-486 abortion pill. The pill is considered safe and effective, with only a 5% chance that it won’t successfully end the pregnancy.

The procedure only takes a few minutes, but you’ll need to plan for a couple of hours to complete labs, fill out paperwork and meet with our counselors.

How does a non-surgical abortion work?

You’ll take a combination of two drugs — Mifeprex and Misoprostol — a day apart under medical supervision. One drug blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed during gestation, while the second causes the uterus to contract, cramp, and expel the pregnancy.

You can expect some heavy bleeding and cramping for a few days. One or two weeks after you take the pill, you’ll return to the office to confirm the success of the procedure.

Am I a candidate for a non-surgical abortion?

You can take the RU-486 pill if you meet several conditions. Your team at Womens Clinic LA will check to ensure the following requirements are met:

  • 70 days or less since the first day of your last period
  • Within normal BMI range
  • The pregnancy is not ectopic

A nonsurgical abortion is not an option if you:

  • Have been pregnant more than 9 weeks
  • Take blood thinners
  • Are allergic to the active ingredient in Mifeprex or Misoprostol
  • Have adrenal fatigue
  • Bleed easily
  • Have an ectopic pregnancy
  • Are currently breastfeeding
  • Use an intrauterine device
