Paragard-IUD(Intrauterine device) or IUC(intrauterine contraceptive) is one of the most effective methods for birth control available in United States. It's even more effective then the Pill. However, unlike the Pill or the Patch or the Ring, Paragard IUD is hormone free. It is 99.5% effective and could be used up to 10 years. Of course if the woman desires pregnancy, the Paragard IUD can be easily removed anytime prior to 10 years.

Paragard IUC is a different birth control method from hormonal contraceptives because it starts to work right away. Plus, you have a flexibility to remove it at any time you wish.

The most common side effects of Paragard IUC are heavier or longer periods for the first few months as your body adjusts. Some patients may have cramping or spotting between periods, but usually just for the first few months.

Don't forget, though, IUD will not protect you from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Women that are at high risk for a sexually transmitted disease and PID or have unexplained bleeding or infection of the uterus should not use Paragard IUD.

Your health care provider will go over the risks and the side effects of Paragard IUD in detail before the device will be inserted.
