Paragard IUD


 

Paragard-IUD (Intrauterine device) or IUC(intrauterine contraceptive) is one of the most effective methods for birth control available in the United States. It's even more effective than the Pill. However, unlike the Pill or the Patch or the Ring, Paragard IUD is hormone free. It is 99.5% effective and could be used up to 10 years. Of course, if the woman desires pregnancy, the Paragard IUD can be easily removed anytime prior to 10 years.

Paragard IUC is a different birth control method from hormonal contraceptives because it starts to work right away. Plus, you have the flexibility to remove it at any time you wish. Paragard IUC works by preventing sperm from reaching the egg and fertilizing it. It may also prevent the egg from attaching to the uterus. Paragard does not alter your regular menstrual cycle. The device is designed to fit comfortably in the uterus and does not interfere with your sex life or the use of tampons.

The most common side effects of Paragard IUC are heavier or longer periods for the first few months as your body adjusts. Some patients may have cramping or spotting between periods, but usually just for the first few months.

Don't forget, though, IUD will not protect you from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Women that are at high risk for a sexually transmitted disease and PID or have unexplained bleeding or infection of the uterus should not use Paragard IUD.
